Biography

Sarah Archer

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was seven years old. In my childhood and teenage years, I fell in love with writing poetry (if you want to read any—don’t worry, this isn’t my teenage poetry—check out my chapbook Weird Women). While in college at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, I discovered screenwriting and sketch comedy. Straight out of school, I moved to Los Angeles to work in film and television. Since then, I’ve moved back to my home state of North Carolina, but came here by way of St. Maarten, England, New York City, and Miami.

My debut novel, The Plus One, was published by Putnam in the US and received a starred review from Booklist. It has also been published in the UK, Germany, and Japan, and is in development for television. I also currently have a feature script in development with MTV Entertainment. In the past, I’ve had material produced for Comedy Central, and I’m a Black List Screenwriting Lab fellow, and have placed in competitions including the Motion Picture Academy’s Nicholl Fellowship and the Tracking Board’s Launch Pad. My short fiction and poetry have appeared in numerous literary magazines.

When I’m not writing, I’m often talking with other writers through my critique groups, as a co-host of the award-winning Charlotte Readers Podcast, or as a public speaker. I’ve had the opportunity to speak and teach on writing in North Carolina, New York, California, and Arizona, as well as to groups online in the US and India.

I share my home with my husband, Gunnar, and our pug, William, who is doubtless snoring very loudly as you read this.
